Chapter

Forty-Seven

“I’m fine, Phin,” Alina said, the edge in her voice growing keener. “Please drop it.”

Phin sighed. His leather-clad friend was stubborn, but so was he. Neither of them would take their last remaining Healing Elixir. Both had received minor injuries in the fights—bruises mostly—but didn’t want to waste an entire potion to heal the damage.

“You two!” Grace said. “I don’t know which of you is more stubborn. You could likely both outwait the stone walls of this cavern.”

“I’m sorry, Grace,” Phin said, “but I think Alina and I both agree that to waste an entire potion on such minor injuries is not a wise use of our resources. I tested it before, and we cannot take partial doses. The potions will either not work or we would need to drink the entire thing.”

“Oh. I didn’t realize that.”

Matilda was still inspecting her new hat, but she threw a glance at the others. “He’s right. Most divers I knew did the same thing, conserving potions unless they were strictly necessary. At least until several floors in, when they were more available, both from vendors and as loot, and the divers had more dungeon credits. I’d refuse to take one, too, with non-serious wounds.”

That ended the conversation. Matilda popped her hat onto her head, a slow smile appearing on her face. She readjusted the machete on her belt and faced the east.

Phin got the hint. He glanced at his wristwatch, still thrilled every time he used it. Why hadn’t he ever thought to put a timepiece on a band like that? “Farther into the graveyard, then? Are we all ready?”

Alina smirked at him and began walking, a little hitch in her stride from her injuries, threading her way through the crumbling and leaning markers toward the massive silhouette of a crypt.

Another group of zombies intercepted them—only four this time with no ghoul among them—and the party made short work of them. In fact, Grace destroyed two of the monsters before they got within range to fight face-to-face, and Phin and Alina put the other two down quickly.

“They seem a lot easier now,” Phin said.

“Don’t get complacent, though,” Matilda cautioned. “Their levels will vary, and a single ghoul, ghast, or other more powerful type can quickly increase the difficulty of a battle. But yes, you’ll get more used to their particular types of combat and become better able to react to them. Not to mention as we find other items, augments, and modules, we’ll all become more powerful.”

Phin looked down at his weapon. He could already feel what Matilda was talking about. The baton felt more comfortable in his hand, like it would respond instantly not just to his body but to his thoughts. He, at times lately, had felt powerful. The sensation was like when a new invention worked flawlessly, causing a euphoric feeling within him that might linger for hours or even days.

The crypt Alina led them to seemed much larger on the outside than it actually was inside. The metal door hung askew, sickly creepers climbing up it and infiltrating the space inside.
